Low frequencies in ABR studies

While behavioral audiograms can cover low frequencies down to 100 Hz (e.g. Branstetter et al., 2017), AEP approaches cannot reliably go below 4-10 kHz because 1) tone pips get too long and/or too broad band at low frequencies, thereby smearing the discrete AEP, or 2) because a sinusoidally amplitude modulated (SAM) tone approach requires amplitude modulation (AM) at frequencies around 1,200 Hz (the maximum envelope following response, EFR) that should be at least 10 times lower than the carrier frequency to work (Linnenschmidt et al., 2013).
